A reflexion on small spaces and density.
In this 3 stories 50m2 Brick townhouse from the 19th century, the research was on density. It was about fitting all the program in a very narrow space while trying to keep some comfortable and modular/evolving spaces. We opened the ground floor as much as possible to simplify the lecture and create an impression of space .Also, there was a big humidity and isolation problem that had to be addressed.
Everything is organized around the staircase which had to be designed completely self-supporting because the wall belonged to the neighbor and building a new wall would have removed too much surface. It was made as a multifunctionnal grid that integrates the structure, the handrail and some shelves. The 1st floor is dedicated to common space, the living room/dining room and kitchen, while the top floor integrates the bedroom and a toilet and the basement a bathroom and a dressing room. The clients were a young couple.
Materiality is also a key element here. The idea was to stay sober with few materials but that would also convey some character and warmth to the house. We used oak wood, black steel and concrete.

Une réflexion sur les petits espaces et la densité.
Dans cette maison de ville en brique de 50m2 sur 3 étages datant du 19ème siècle, la recherche portait sur la densité. Il s'agissait de faire tenir l’ensemble du programme dans un espace très étroit tout en créant des espaces confortables et modulables/évolutifs. Nous avons ouvert le rez-de-chaussée autant que possible au moyen de poutres métalliques pour simplifier la lecture de l’espace et en agrandir sa perception. Du point de vue du confort thermique, un gros problème d'humidité a été adressé et l’isolation a été renforcée. La verrière a été entièrement changée.
Tout est organisé autour de l'escalier que nous avons conçu de manière totalement autoportante car le mur appartenait au voisin et la construction d'un nouveau mur aurait enlevé trop de surface. Il a été pensé comme une grille multifonctionnelle intégrant la structure, le garde-corps et des étagères.
Le premier étage est consacré à l'espace commun, le salon/salle à manger et la cuisine, tandis que le dernier étage intègre la chambre et un WC et le sous-sol une salle de bain et un dressing. Les clients étaient un jeune couple sans enfants.
La matérialité est également un élément clé ici. L'idée était de rester sobre avec peu de matériaux, tout en apportant caractère et chaleur à la maison. Nous avons utilisé du bois de chêne, de l'acier noir et du béton.
