This Penthouse was all about the terrace and the view. A 180 degrees view on the old city of Yaffo and the sea.
The apartment surface was almost half the one of the terrace and the whole concept was to erase the boundaries between inside and outside. In a country like Israel, the terrace can be used more than 3/4 of the year. The idea was to build ephemeral and modular, dismountable outdoor bedrooms, pushing the regulation around by reinterpreting the world “furniture” as much as could be. Basically the outdoor furniture and ephemeral tents would provide the clients with real bedrooms which they needed in the program.
All the project was conceived with organic forms, as if nature entered the house. The materiality played a central part. Plants, clay, earth walls, lava stone. All materials that are local, alive and last forever. It was important tu use local know-how and artisans.
The outdoor furniture and “rooms” were conceived using boat textiles techniques in order to provide strong and lasting shelters. The floor, walls, benches and plants pots were all connected and continuously covered in clay. Also, a big pergola lengthened the inside and created a shelter from the strong Israeli sun allowing to use the outside all day long.
